About the Author
Adhirath Sethi is a businessman and author, based in Bangalore. He is also a trustee for the Agastya International Foundation. He is an alumnus of The Rishi Valley School, Eton College, and the London School of Economics. A former management consultant with the Boston Consulting Group, he took an all too eager plunge into entrepreneurship in 2008. In 2019, to commemorate Agastya’s two decades since inception, a proposal was put forth to capture the story of the foundation’s remarkable journey. He spent the first half of 2022 interviewing anyone that might have insights into Agastya. Speaking with everyone from front-line workers to donors, to board members, and senior management, the inside story of Agastya began to emerge.
As a board member of the Agastya International Foundation, and as Chairman of the Navam Foundation, Adhirath’s involvement in the NGO space spans over ten years and includes contributions to fundraising, operations management and strategy.

About the author

Adhirath Sethi is a writer whose work spans the genres of fiction, satire, crime thrillers, psychological thrillers, dark comedy, and yes – even romance.
If that seems like a handful, it’s only because if there is a good story to be told, he needs to tell it; and good stories can come from anywhere.
He writes because situations intrigue him. There is a joy he finds in exploring ‘what-ifs’ and turning them into sub plots that are then allowed to run unsupervised in his mind, colliding recklessly with one another. From the ensuing chaos, he draws out a story. He does not know whether it will be funny or sad, but he hopes that his style of writing appeals to his readers and has them coming back for more.
As an individual he hopes to remain as uncomplicated as possible, most unlike what he expects of his stories. Despite all the experiences afforded to him by a childhood spent in boarding schools, he is an introvert who recognises the value of networking and measures his gregariousness carefully. His ultimate daily ambition is to go home early.
His first book – The Debt Collector’s Due – was brought to life by his own trysts in business. Having come across a debt collector he was struck by the brutal mundanity of the job. He could not help but consider how a story might unfold should such an individual be cast into an uncontrollably thrilling predicament.
His second book – Where the Hills Hide their Secrets – is equal parts murder mystery, revenge thriller and a coming of age journey all rolled into one. The inspiration for the anglicised, post-colonial town of Nalanoor comes from the experiences of the author’s own grandparents. The shocking twists within the story however, are of his own design.
Background
Adhirath Sethi spent seven happy years at the Rishi Valley School in Andhra Pradesh. Although seen as an offbeat institution, the school is highly steeped in tradition and gave him an appreciation of Indian culture that is much a part of who he is.
At the age of seventeen he was shipped off to England, where Eton College impressed upon him a vastly western influence and pushed him to expand his outlook far beyond his comfort zones.
He considers his years at the London School of Economics as having shaped his character considerably. While the degree in economics certainly helped, meeting his future wife there was clearly the highlight of that experience.
His three years as a management consultant with the Boston Consulting Group were thoroughly enjoyable. The only thing that could have extracted him from retiring peacefully as a consultant someday was his own desire to be an entrepreneur.

- Reviewed in India on 18 May 2024As a personal friend of Mr. Ramji Raghavan, I had the unique pleasure and honor to work for and with the Agastya Foundation from 2005 to 2015 from Bangalore India. Having visited the Kuppam Campus numerous times, taking my two daughters, visiting neighbouring Government schools, participating in Operation Vasantha, and much more, Agastya and the Mission captured a deep part of my heart and soul. It was at Synopsys where we were able to sponsor mobile science labs and create an innovative science fair called Anveshana. I was so fortunate to meet the luminaries mentioned in the book. The Moving of Mountains takes us through an insightful journey of promoting curiosity, removing fear, and building confidence for millions of school children across India. Today Agastya touches over 5 million students per year. The book touches on the challenges, twists, and turns to execute the Mission that has turned into a Movement of global proportions. A must read for any scientists and social entrepreneur.

5.0 out of 5 stars Agastya: A Blueprint for Reimagining Public Education
Verified PurchaseThe Moving of Mountains, is a visionaries manual for defying the brute force of compulsory education with a dream, an audacious one, that seeks to transform school the factory model to a pollinator garden. Ostensibly told as the story of three men, The Moving of Mountains is a compelling story of three visionaries brought together by time and chance, imagining an evolving vision of education for children and teachers in rural India–the likes of which the world has not seen. This narrative crafted by Adhirath Sethi, tells the origin and evolution of the Agastya International Foundation and its 25 year arc into a movement that is transforming education though all of India. Moving Mountains" is a 21st century primer on leading, on innovation, and for those critically inclined to want to reinvent and remake education into a more joyous, human, and meaningful experience for all our children and the planet.

5.0 out of 5 stars IGNITING MILLIONS OF YOUNG MINDS FOR BRIGHTER LIVES
Verified PurchaseMulika vana's Oasi in 2005 - Agastya's campus - Kuppam, India
"My prayer is that one day, talented individuals will greatly contribute to the well-being and improvement of my people," said the unassuming monk I had coincidentally crossed paths with. And he went away, blessing me with his eternal friendship. It was long ago, in a secluded hermitage nestled in a dense forest high in the Apennines, which I had visited out of curiosity. Once a physician, later a Jesuit, and ultimately a monk, the prophetic Dom Pedro Rebello was the founder of the New Camaldoli Hermitage in California. A few days later, he would meet with Pope Paul VI and return to his native India.
In The Moving of Mountains, Agastya stands out as a great contributor, embodying one of those holy missions my monk friend dreamt of. Agastya is a world-changing example of our time.
At the culmination of a successful career, far removed from his childhood dream, the idea of what would become Agastya resurfaced, almost inadvertently but inexorably, in the mind and heart of its founder, Ramji Raghavan. The Moving of Mountains tells the 25-year journey of Agastya, with revealing details of challenges of Himalayan proportions, pivotal turning moments, vibrant and joyful participation of teachers and students, world-class yet cost-effective innovations, and episodes of intense human interaction. It traces the inception and purity of the idea to its present massive and transformative impact on India's education system. Adhirath Sethi carefully portrays the creative solutions that emerged from crucial circumstances, such as the low-cost, high-impact "coup de théâtre" of making a mulika vana's oasis in a once arid wasteland, managing demanding daily activities, fundraising, and social interactions. The purpose is to bring hands-on science and art education to every corner of India and, perhaps one day not too far away, to the entire world, sparking curiosity, nurturing young minds, and giving millions of children without promising futures the opportunity and confidence to enjoy brighter lives. The Agastya’s method - Aah! Aha! Ha-ha! (Why, How, Joy) - is rooted in simplicity but epistemologically profound.
Agastya is a remarkable source of timeless lessons and a compelling case of the non-linear hurdles a visionary entrepreneurial team faces when bringing unique ideas to life. At one point, I couldn’t help but draw parallels with my direct experiences in top management across three continents. The significance of the learning was so startling that it elicited a spontaneous “Ha-ha!” of joy.
To all education leaders, senior officials, and ambitious prime ministers, along with members of their governments, who are dedicated to proactively improving the lives of their citizens: please consider the transformative power of Agastya in creating a brighter future for children and all.
My European cultural background leads me to see Agastya's purpose as close to that of the
Society of Jesus. Is saving souls or nurturing minds and hearts so different? Like Ignatius of Loyola's Society, may Agastya live for many centuries!

5.0 out of 5 stars Agastya: transforming education for millions of low-income families in India
Verified PurchaseFor those of us who cannot understand why our school systems, almost everywhere, are hopelessly entrenched in ineffective and vestigial 20th Century educational thinking and are oblivious to the urgent need for fundamental change, this book provides much-needed inspiration. It is a beautifully written and deeply insightful story of Agastya's empowerment, through active, hands-on, discovery-based learning, of many millions of children and young people from low-income families in India. Sethi vividly describes the iconoclastic, visionary, passionate leadership of Agastya's founders, their profound understanding of how children and young people learn, their exceptional expertise in organisational dynamics, and their inexhaustible resilience and resourcefulness in the face of constant setbacks. Agastya's achievements are unthinkable in the world of mainstream education; there is much in this book for mainstream educators to learn from Agastya.
